We are now just one month away from the introduction of the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) within London. As of the 8th of April 2019 ULEZ will replace the T-charge which was also introduced to combat air quality issues within London, however it was primarily aimed at the most polluting older vehicles and had a fixed penalty of £10.
This means that there will be a new standard introduced throughout London for vehicles to comply with, or they will face an additional fine on top of the congestion charge. For most vehicles including cars, motorcycles and vans (under 3.5 tonnes) this will mean a fixed £12.50 ULEZ zone charge per day for entering the new zone. However, the major changes from T-charge are being introduced to large goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes as well as coaches, these will be charged a £100 penalty per day when operating within ULEZ.
Regular vehicles will only be charged an extra £2.50 while entering the ULEZ in comparison to T-Charge. However, companies that operate a fleet of vehicles over 3.5tonnes face paying £100 per day which could add up to thousands per week for multiple vehicle fleets.
Starting in October 2021 the ULEZ area will expand to areas of London inside the north and south circular roads in an attempt to further increase air quality within London.
